One of the most popular whiskey brands in the world, Johnnie Walker, has decided to release a limited edition of its whiskey in bottles made of paper that will come from sustainably-sourced wood pulp. It will be launched in 2021. The company has partnered with a Pilot Lite, a venture management company, to launch a new sustainable packaging technology company Pulpex Limited.

The paper bottle that will be used to package Johnnie Walker whiskey will be scalable and recyclable in standard waste streams. It will also provide a potential alternative to the use of glass bottles that have a larger carbon footprint.

Ewan Andrew, the Chief Sustainability Officer of Diageo, the parent company of Johnnie Walker, officially announced the move. He said, “We’re proud to have created this world first. We are constantly striving to push the boundaries within sustainable packaging, and this bottle has the potential to be truly ground-breaking. It feels fitting that we should launch it with Johnnie Walker, a brand that has often led the way in innovation throughout its 200 years existence.”

Though Johnnie Walker’s move to switch to paper bottles from plastic is certainly a good thing, especially environment-loving folks who love whiskey and want to try easy cocktail recipes, it is not the smartest move. According to reports, experts think that we need to reduce the amount of waste produced by the world. Everything we produce or recycle has an environmental cost and the future generations would be in danger if we don’t change our habits.

The reports also say that experts have also highlighted that if Johnnie Walker makes paper bottles, it would involve cutting down trees, and it costs the environment. The cost is too high for endangered animals as well as indigenous people who live near the forests or in the forests which are being chopped down for paper.

Another concern about Johnnie Walker’s paper bottles highlighted by experts is that whether the coating inside the bottles that helps prevent the whiskey from being soaked through is recyclable or not. If it’s not, Johnnie Walker’s new whiskey bottle would not be 100% recyclable and would still be a little threat to the environment.
