Elon Musk Confirms Tesla Cybertruck, Roadster and Semi Delayed

Tesla have been hit with further delays amid the semiconductor crisis.

Tesla has recently announced latest changes to its production plans, and the news is not good. The production of the cheapest car of the brand has been paused while there will be delays in launching Tesla Cybertruck, Tesla Roadster and Semi. The main reason behind these delays is the ongoing semiconductor crisis.

Talking about the pause in production, Elon Musk said this at Tesla’s 2021 financial results presentation “We’re not currently working on the $US25,000 car. At some point, we will, but we have enough on our plate right now – too much on our plate, frankly.”

 

Tesla Cybertruck, Roadster, Semi delays

Now, the carmaker’s focus would be on developing three vehicles it announced sometime back, the Tesla Cybertruck ute, the Tesla Roadster sports car, and a semi-heavy vehicle. Musk expressed hope that these vehicles might go on sale in 2023. Musk stated, “We will not be introducing any new vehicle models this year – it would not make sense, as we will still be parts constrained. We will be [doing] a lot of engineering and tooling to create those vehicles – Cybertruck, Semi, Roadster, Optimus [the Tesla robot] – and be ready to bring those to production, hopefully, next year. That is the most likely, but it is dependent on are we able to produce more cars, or fewer cars [in 2022, as a sign of improving semiconductor supply].”

 

Tesla will also focus on developing Tesla Bot (codenamed Optimus), which is a controversial human-like robot that was depicted during its announcement in 2021 with a human dancing on stage in a head-to-toe bodysuit.

With the production halted, Tesla’s cheapest car will likely be launched by 2025. As the company’s models usually arrive in Australia about two or three years after going on sale overseas, we might not see the cheapest car by 2027 or 2028.

 

Sharing about the most important product of Tesla, Musk said, “In terms of priority of product, I think the most important product development we’re doing this year is actually the Optimus [Tesla Bot] humanoid robot. This has the potential to be more significant than the vehicle business over time. If you think about the economy, the foundation of the economy is labour. So, what happens if you have a labour shortage? I’m not sure what an economy even means at that point. So that’s what Optimus is about.”
