American Airlines has done something incredible. It has acquired its fleet supersonic by entering an agreement with aircraft manufacturer Boom Supersonic. As per the agreement, the US airline will buy up to 20 Overture jets. The contract also includes the option for additional 40 jets.

The images of the highly anticipated supersonic aircraft were released recently. Designed to carry 65 to 80 passengers, the supersonic jet has twice the speed of any current commercial jet. The aircraft is being developed to fly over 600 routes in shorter time frames while using 100% sustainable fuel alternatives even when cruising at 60,000 feet. It will also cover the most crucial routes like New York to London.

Boom Supersonic and American Airlines

Blake Scholl, founder, and CEO of Boom Supersonic, stated, “We are proud to share our vision of a more connected and sustainable world with American Airlines. We believe Overture can help American deepen its competitive advantage on network, loyalty, and overall airline preference through the paradigm-changing benefits of cutting travel times in half.”

American Airlines is not the first US airline that has shared plans to buy the new aircraft. United Airlines has already announced plans to acquire new Overtures for its fleet.

Derek Kerr, American Airlines’ chief financial officer, stated, “Looking to the future, supersonic travel will be an important part of our ability to deliver for our customers. We are excited about how Boom will shape the future of travel for our company and our customers.”

Though all the excitement for the supersonic jets seems good, it will be a while before The Overture can transport passengers. It is expected to roll out in 2025 and might not enter commercial service till 2029.

The last time passengers travelled via a supersonic aircraft was about two decades back when the Franco-British airliner Concorde went bust due to high flight costs.

Boom CEO Blake Scholl believes his supersonic jet will have a place in the market as the tickets cost around 4,000 US dollars or AU$5,700 to 5,000 US dollars or AU$7000 to fly from New York to London. This journey could be completed in about three and a half hours. Each plane will have a list price of $200 million, but the manufacturer might give lower rates to airlines like American Airlines.
