The coronavirus pandemic has turned all release plans in the entertainment industry upside down (well, it also affected everything else in the world). Back in February, when everything was still in order, Disney announced that the beloved musical Hamilton of Lin Manuel Miranda was coming to movie screens on the 15th of October, 2021. Rather than a straight adaptation, this version would be a filmed production of the original Hamilon Broadway cast. Disney thought they could keep that in their sleeve for well over a year. But the pandemic came and the plan was changed. Disney sees this as a great opportunity for Disney Plus to generate revenue and rack up more subscribers, while everyone is stuck at home (most likely, spending most of their time on streaming platforms).

Hamilton musical will now come to Disney Plus in July 2020. Yes, this July. It’s going to be released on the 3rd of July 2020 to be exact. So they moved up Hamilton musical by over a year.

“I’m so proud of how beautifully Tommy Kail has brought ‘Hamilton’ to the screen. He’s given everyone who watches this film the best seat in the house,” Miranda said in a press release. “I’m so grateful to Disney and Disney+ for reimagining and moving up our release to July 4th weekend of this year, in light of the world turning upside down. I’m so grateful to all the fans who asked for this, and I’m so glad that we’re able to make it happen. I’m so proud of this show. I can’t wait for you to see it.”

We’re not going to hear us objecting to this. Who doesn’t like more entertainment? While it would have been nice to see Hamilton on the movie screen, it is not so bad to watch Hamilton at home through Disney Plus and now having the ability to watch this musical masterpiece whenever. However, we should all be prepared as the profanity might be dropped as the streaming platform is still family-oriented. How will the show open up with, “How does the bastard, orphan, son of a whore…” though?
