As of Today, It's Now Legal to Grow and Smoke Weed in ACT

The ACT has become the first-ever Aussie state or territory that has legalised the possession of Cannabis. People who are over 18 years of age can now smoke weed or possess up to 50 grams of dried weed in a day. The law is not without restriction as there are many things a person must know if he or she doesn’t want to get arrested.

The law that allows Canberrans to grow and smoke weed came into effect on 31st January 2020. According to it, people in the area can cultivate two cannabis plants at a time. The bill was passed in 2018 by the ACT Legislative Assembly.

Some people wrongly believe that it will be a boon for Canberrans as they will be able to smoke weed in restricted amounts without fear. The bill aims to help bring people closer to the cannabis market and reduce the burden on the criminal justice system. The explanatory statement of the bill says that the bill would “reduce the burden on our criminal justice system and bring us a step closer to a cannabis market.”

What’s Still Punishable by Law?

People in the area who are thinking that they can smoke weed and also sell it should be cautious. Selling and buying cannabis is punishable as per the Commonwealth law. If you provide weed to someone else, you can be arrested as it’s still an offence. You can’t cultivate more than two plants or have over 150 gram of cannabis which has been harvested.

People less than 18-year-old can’t smoke weed, buy it or sell it. If you give or sell it to a person less than 18-years-old, you are committing a crime. Artificial cultivation is also not allowed. You can’t also cultivate it or smoke weed in a public place. A breach of these laws can make you eligible for two years of imprisonment.

The author of the bill that allows some people to smoke weed asserted that the bill seeks to “bring cannabis laws more in line with modern community standards and reflect global trends.” To be on the safe side of the law, please check the bill here.
