Aston Martin has revealed another speedster, which is just a concept vehicle. Christened as DBR22, the car is meant to demonstrate the brand’s latest technology and in-house customizing house, Q. It is displayed at Monterey Car Week.

The brand said the DBR22 Concept was inspired by its racing heritage. The design of the DBR22 pays tribute to the 1952 DB3S and the DBR1, which won Le Mans in 1959. At that time, Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori were behind the wheel.

The design team of the new Aston Martin’s concept vehicle wanted to minimize the number of body panels used to create a more sculpted and muscular appearance. The grille of the DBR22 also features a new carbon fibre design whose two vertical slats are bisected by a single horizontal slat design inspired by the 1952 DB3S and the DBR1.

According to Marek Reichman, Aston Martin’s chief creative officer, “We set our design systems to ‘hyper-drive,’ pushing the exploration of formalism further and endeavouring to express a future in the here today. Where could we go with the surfaces, proportion, and form. Combining this approach with advanced process, technology, and materials, we’ve effectively modernized our racing bloodline and created a new pedigree.”

There is a perforated panel under the headlights of the DBR22 concept car, which allows hot air to exit the rear of the vehicle. It also works with the diffuser to offer downforce for the speedster. Its thin side mirror stalks also help the Aston Marin’s speedster manages the air around it.

Aston Martin also used 3D printing for the first time. It was used to create parts that make up the rear subframe. The novel technology allowed Aston Martin’s engineers to considerably reduce the car’s weight without reducing stiffness.

In the words of Roberto Fedeli, Aston Martin’s chief technical officer, “DBR22 showcases Aston Martin’s unique capabilities, with the world-class design combined with an agile, intelligent approach to engineering and production. For a car that was designed to celebrate the ultimate bespoke customization service, the engineering developments mean DBR22 truly has the dynamic theater to match, ensuring the drive is just as addictive as its looks.”

Power and Speed

Power to the DBR22 comes from a 5.2-liter, twin-turbo V12 which has a peak output of 705 hp (526 kW/715 PS) and 555 lb-ft (753 Nm) of torque. The engine is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission which uses torque-shaping to improve how the car delivers its force to the road.

The concept vehicle can reach 0-60 mph or 0-96 km/h in just 3.4 seconds. It also offers a top speed of 198 mph or 319 km/h. Due to a new rear subframe, adaptive dampers, and a pinned steering column, there is greater accuracy in the handling.

The DBR22 is a concept vehicle, so car enthusiasts won’t be able to find out what the performance feels like. Members of the public can see the new creation of Aston Martin at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance from Friday, August 19, to Sunday, August 21.
