The new co-chairman of DC Studios, James Gunn, is building a new DC universe. He is also writing another script for a Superman movie. Sadly, the new film won’t see Henry Cavill donning the cape.

Cavill has played the DC superhero since the 2013 film Man of Steel. He last appeared in the role in a cameo in Black Adam. In October, the actor resigned from his titular role in the Netflix show The Witcher and at the same time, he announced he would be returning to play Superman again.

However, on Wednesday, Cavill shared via Instagram that Gunn and his co-chair, Peter Safran, met him to deliver the news.

He wrote, “I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”

He also said that fans might want to “mourn for a bit,” but “Superman is still around.” Cavill added, “My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.”

James Gunn’s New Plans

Gunn’s new film on Superman would focus on the younger years of the DC character posing as Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent and was reported that Gunn could potentially direct the film as well as writing it.

Gunn shared this on Twitter on Wednesday “Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year. Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry, and we’re big fans, and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”

Why Isn’t Henry Cavill Reprising His Role as Superman?

Though many people liked the actor’s portrayal of the character, some people didn’t like this interpretation of the Man of Steel that Zack Snyder introduced. He proved to be a controversial character. It is probably why Warner Bros. struggled to figure out how to use Superman and ensure that the general audience got back on board with the superhero. So, it seems logical that Gunn and Safran are looking for a fresh start.

A Black Superman film produced by JJ Abrams and written by author Ta-Nehisi Coates is reportedly still going ahead. It will probably not be impacted by Gunn’s film. There is no word yet on what Cavill’s next project might be.
