Oscars 2020 will not have a host. It has been confirmed by Karey Burke, the President of ABC Entertainment. She announced in front of the press at the Television Critics Association winter press tour that was organised on Monday at Pasadena, California.

ABC will broadcast Oscars 2020. Burke stressed that as going hostless worked in 2019, the pattern would be repeated. She said, “Let me confirm it now, together with the Academy, that there will be no traditional host this year.”

It isn’t the first time Burke has talked about Oscars 2020 being hostless. She hinted at that possibility during a March Creative Interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Highlighting how 2019 Oscars were a hit despite being hostless and how the pattern could be repeated she stated “We’re having those conversations with the Academy right now. We are extremely happy with how the show went. Odds are you’ll see us repeating what we consider to be a successful formula.”

Stephanie Allain and Lynette Howell Taylor will produce Oscars 2020. Both of them are Oscar-nominated and are getting involved with the award ceremony for the first time.

In 2019, the Oscars were hostless due to a specific reason. Kevin Hart was supposed to host the ceremony, but he backed out after resurfacing of some controversial old tweets in which he expressed anti-gay sentiments. No one replaced Hart and the season went hostless which was a good thing as Oscars 2019 had better ratings than Oscars 2018 ratings, the latter of which fetched all-time low numbers.

After the success of hostless Oscars 2019, Many award ceremonies deliberately went hostless, such as 2019 Emmy Awards.

Oscars 2020 will be held Sunday, Feb. 9, on ABC. It is good that they will be hostless as hosts rarely gain the respect they deserve. If they are too vanilla, they are criticised. If they are too controversial, they are criticised then too. Awards going hostless present a golden opportunity to the presenters and the filmmakers/film stars as the focus remains on them and the movies that are nominated.
