According to a recent study, it is far more lucrative to invest in LEGO than to invest in wine, art, and gold. The study found that the value of the second hand LEGO set market rises by 11% every year. This is a return that is much better and faster as compared with wine, stamps, gold, bonds, and stocks.

With that, researchers from the Higher School of Economics stated that sometimes, lucrative gains could come from investments in a LEGO set. Similarly, action figures of superheroes, model cars, and trains, and Barbie dolls, all come with such potential.

Regarding this, Victoria Dobrynskaya from the Faculty of Economics at HSE stated, “We are used to thinking that people buy such items as jewelry, antiques or artworks as an investment.”

She further added, “Tens of thousands of deals are made on the secondary LEGO market. Even taking into account the small prices of most sets, this is a huge market that is not well known by traditional investors.”

For instance, the Millennium Falcon is among the most expensive LEGO set. Similarly, the Imperial Star Destroyer and Death Star II from Star Wars, along with the Taj Mahal, are also quite expensive. The study took into account 2322 sets that were produced between 1987 and 2015.

Factors including special editions, limited production, and rarity have increased significantly in prices. Such a LEGO set would not cost a good amount on the second-hand market. Furthermore, in the study, no single opened LEGO set was considered. All the sets were still unopened.

Regarding this, Victoria Dobrynskaya stated, “Sets produced 20-30 years ago make LEGO fans nostalgic, and prices for them go through the roof.”

However, she further clarified that not every LEGO set will make it big. So, a real LEGO fan must be able to sort out the nuances in the market and invest based on the potential of the set.

So, investing in an unopened LEGO set is not as simple as it might seem. But those who have the right experience see it as a very lucrative investment with real potential for big profits.
