Overtaking the world record egg as Instagram’s most-liked post

Lionel Messi’s Instagram post of him holding the World Cup trophy has become the most liked picture in the history of the social media platform — overtaking the photo of an egg which was posted by Christ Godfrey back in 2019.

Godfrey’s world record egg got a staggering 56.1 million likes, but Messi’s recent image of him lifting the World Cup after Argentina beat France in Sunday’s World Cup finals has now surpassed it.

In the aftermath of Argentina’s thrilling penalty shootout win beating France, the Paris Saint-Germain star player took to Instagram to post 10 pictures of the 2022 FIFA World Cup celebrations in Qatar.

In the time since he uploaded it, Messi’s post has reached 56 million likes, with the forward also surpassing 402 million followers on Instagram.

Accompanying the post Messi wrote a caption that read: ‘WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!!!!! I dreamed it so many times, I wanted it so much that I still haven’t fallen, I can’t believe it……

‘Thank you very much to my family, to all who support me and also to all who believed in us. We demonstrate once again that Argentines when we fight together and united we are capable of achieving what we set out to do.

‘The merit belongs to this group, which is above individualities, it is the strength of all fighting for the same dream’.

Messi had a huge impact in the World Cup Finals match as he scored twice, while he also converted his penalty in the shootout.

It completed a fairytale for the 35-year-old Paris Saint-Germain player, who just won the one medal missing from his collection.

Lionel Messi and his teammates flew from Qatar back to Argentina on Monday, where they celebrated their World Cup win together with thousands of jubilant fans in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
