The new electric SUV of Italian luxury vehicles company, Maserati, the Maserati Grecale Folgore, might overtake the key rivals in power stakes, say reports. The SUV set to be launched in 2023 might have dual motors capable of producing up to 500kW. If that happens, it will be a good contender to Tesla Model Y and the next Porsche Macan.

A reveal of the 2022 Maserati Grecale is planned for next month, and the electric variant might also be launched alongside it. The overseas deliveries of the electric SUV might start as soon as late this year. All-wheel drive is expected to be standard. Reports say the Maserati Grecale Folgore will have two 250kW electric motors that will be placed on each axle. If it happens, the electric SUV will be the most powerful production and road-going Maserati that has ever been produced.

In addition to the motors, the electric SUV will probably also have a 400-volt battery pack, an “on-board charging module,” and an all-wheel-drive disconnect system. The latter will allow one of the motors (possibly the one on the front) to be decoupled to save energy.

Though the details of power, battery capacity, driving range, or performance of Maserati Grecale Folgore are not shared, it is likely that the 0-100km/h sprint time will start with a three thanks to 500kW power and an all-wheel drive.

The claimed 400-volt and dual motor powertrain are not in line with Maserati’s more advanced 800-volt system planned for other new electric cars, such as MC20 supercar, GranTurismo coupe, and GranCabrio convertible. Those will support 300kW DC fast charging and will use three electric motors.

There is no clarity on why Maserati Grecale Folgore might opt for a 400-volt system. The only explanation that comes to mind is that maybe the electric SUV cannot support three motors and a higher voltage.

The core Grecale range will arrive in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2022. It is unclear whether the new electric SUV, the Maserati Grecale Folgore, will be released in Australia at the same time or not. We can just wait and hope it does!
