New South Wales is Implementing a Digital ID Scheme

It’s making Identification more convenient for everyone

New South Wales is Now Implementing a Digital ID Scheme

Update: The New South Wales registration system has already crashed today, most likely, due to high influx of users trying to get digital id’s. The good news is, by the time you read this, the system should be up and running.

The future is definitely here, mates. The New South Wales government suggested years ago that people should be able to display legitimate Identification on their phones, such as a driver’s licence.

Great news, the project has finished the trial phase and the digital Identification are now ready for public release and is available through the Services NSW app .

The application process is quite simple. Just install the app (available for both iPhone and Android users), register an active email address account, enter your licence information correctly, and you’re on your way. The only thing you need to be mindful of is the condition of your smartphone screen and your battery juice. ID will only be deemed valid in  New South Wales if it can be clearly displayed on screen (which obviously also means your phone is powered-on).

We know some of you might ask, “What will be the procedure if police pulls you over?” Although New South Wales Police may allow a virtual licence officially, it is still an offence to use a mobile phone while in-control of a vehicle. Of course, motorists have been advised to disengage their vehicles completely and wait until a police officer has prompted them to produce a licence before they even think of accessing their digital ID’s on their phones. To our fellow motorists, always keep in mind to safe on the roads.
