Apple is a brand that has gained popularity all over the world in no time. It leads the market by using innovation and creating products that keep the customers hooked. One of such important products by the company is Apple Watch that has proven its worth by besting the entire Swiss watch industry in 2019.

The Verge has reported that new sales estimates that were compiled by Strategy Analytics, Apple has shipped 31 million units of Apple watch series 4 and 5 in 2019. These numbers probably make the watch the highest-selling timepiece of any kind that is present across the globe. The costs of the sales of Apple Watch is more than AUD 700, which means that the sales are higher than the entire Swiss Watch industry.

The sales of watches from other renowned makers like Swatch and Tissot, Patek Philippe and Rolex have been more than 21 million units in 2019. It clearly indicates that the sale by these brands is only two-thirds of the total market share of Apple.

Steven Waltzer, a Strategy Analytics Analyst, thinks “Traditional Swiss watchmakers, like Swatch and Tissot, are losing the smartwatch wars. Apple Watch is delivering a better product through deeper retail channels and appealing to younger consumers who increasingly want digital wrist wear. The window for Swiss watch brands to make an impact in smartwatches is closing.”

The Executive Director of Strategy Analytics, Neil Mawston, thinks that young buyers who like technology more than style (and probably own an iPhone) are pushing the sales of Apple Watch. He said, “Analog wristwatches remain popular among older consumers, but younger buyers are tipping toward smartwatches and computerised wristwear.”

The owners of Tissot, Swatch declined to comment on the rising sales and popularity of Apple Watch. LVMH, the owner of Tag Heuer is also yet to respond to a request for comment on this matter.

It is likely that the reports of Apple Watch’s rising popularity and market share would prompt luxury watchmakers to launch their own smartwatches soon. Tag Heuer has already released several models, including one that costs more than AUD 268,000.
