Sony Pictures Entertainment has revealed the first official trailer for Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Together with screenwriter Gil Kenan, Reitman has created a new story set in the Ghostbusters world today that builds on the events of his father’s first two Ghostbusters films, Ivan Reitman, and starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Harold Ramis.

Reitman has stated before that he likes and respects the 2016 Ghostbusters remake which was directed by Paul Feig, but his story will be a sequel of Ghostbusters II.

Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace are at the heart of the new Ghostbusters movie. Coon plays Callie, the mother of Phoebe and Trevor (played by Grace and Wolfhard, respectively). Phoebe is a young girl who is obsessed with science, while Trevor is more of a gearhead. Since inheriting an estate previously owned by Callie’s father, the family moves to a small town in Oklahoma.

We don’t know who the father of Callie is, but we actually found out that he had a connection with the original Ghostbusters. The events of the film also account for the event known as the “Manhattan Crossrip,” the main event at the end of the first Ghostbusters movie in 1984. Trevor, Phoebe, and their friends soon start to explore the property and discover all sorts of Ghostbusters gear. Even though they’re too young to know what the equipment were for, their Ghostbusters superfan summer school teacher Mr. Grooberson, played by Paul Rudd, lays down some knowledge.

The trailer strongly suggests that Grace is playing the granddaughter of Egon Spengler, who was played in the first two films by Harold Ramis. Sadly, Ramis died in 2014, putting to rest the thoughts of creating a full-on Ghostbusters 3 that paved the way for the overlooked reboot of Paul Feig in 2016. Yet contrary to that film, Afterlife is a “legasequel” in that it is both a sequel and a reboot of Ghostbusters II.

We like the tactile nature of what we see on the screen here, and Jason Reitman as a director has a knack for interpersonal relationships so we’re actually excited to see what lead to the possibility of a blockbuster sequel. However, the trailer of Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a big step in the right direction so far.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife also managed to get some familiar faces in place in addition to Coon, Wolfhard, and Grace. Back in June, Sigourney Weaver has confirmed that she, Hudson, Aykroyd, and Annie Potts would appear in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, so we’ll be seeing a presence of the original characters in the movie.

The exact release date of Ghostbusters: Afterlife is yet to be revealed but we do know that the movie is set to arrive Winter next year.
