The New Impressive Samsung Galaxy S20 Lineup Has Arrived
Samsung Galaxy S20

The Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2020 is now finished. The company just announced the new Samsung Galaxy S20 lineup which has three phones, with a number of variants, the S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra.

We weren’t surprised by the specs (thanks to the leaks), but now they’re finally official. We have all the details right here for you, including pricing and the release date.

While Samsung began testing 5G at its S10 launch in 2019, it’s now moving forward with the next-gen connectivity. This year only the the entry-level S20 and one of the S20+ models will have 4G connectivity. As for the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, it will only be available with 5G.

Now, here are the specs.

Specs of Samsung Galaxy S20 phones

Starting with the entry level, we have the Samsung Galaxy S20, which comes in 8GB RAM with 128GB memory (4G) or 12GB RAM with 128GB memory (5G). Next is the S20+, having four options- 8GB RAM with 128GB on 4G or 12GB RAM/ with either 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of storage on 5G.

The variants might got you confused but if you’ve managed to keep up, here the details of the Ultra. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra only comes with 5G, but you can either choose 12GB RAM with 128GB or 256GB of storage, or opt the top tier phone which comes with 16GB RAM with 512GB storage. If you’re thinking those impressive specs are going to cost you an arm and a leg, you’re right. But we’ll get to that a little later.

Interestingly, the Galaxy phone with the top specs, S10+, came with a TB of storage. They probably scaled the storage back this year because the pricing was going to be quite steep, obviously.

This year, the display of all three devices have been given a 120Hz refresh rate. Truly stunning.

The S20 batteries

When it comes to juice life, there’s also a significant improvement on the Samsung Galxy S20 series compared to the S10, well at least on paper. Your tech influencers will surely test the battery life of these devices to find out if those are true. The S20 comes with a 4,000mAH battery, the S20+ with 4,500mAH and the S20 Ultra bumps the battery up to 5,000mAH.  All of the devices come with fast wireless charging – 2.0 and wireless power share. Though we haven’t seen this feature work effectively in any phone brand that promotes it. Who will share battery charge if their phone charge runs out just as fast?

At least it will be good for charging wireless earbuds, like the new Samsung Galaxy Buds+, which come free with some of the pre-orders.

All phones will have the Infinity-0 display which is Dynamic AMOLED with an in-screen ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, both of which were introduced to the public in 2019 with the S10 range. Notchless but “The Hole” is also back housing the front-facing camera and face-unlock sensor.

S20 Cameras

And then there’s the camera.

The S-Series cameras have been great over the past few years, but have been outmatched by competitors such as Oppo, Huawei and Google. The iPhone 11 Pro Max also tried but it’s still not the best.

Now, the Samsung Galaxy S series is back in the game. the details on the spec sheet are quite impressive. Will it be crowned as the best this year?

The Samsung Galaxy S20 boasts a triple rear setup with a 64MP telephoto, a 12MP wide and a 12MP ultra-wide lens. At the front it has a 10MP sensor. This is definitely an upgrade from last year’s entry-level, S10e ,which only had two cameras on the back and the same MP front-facing sensor.

The S20+ has the same camera setup, but also adds a ‘DepthVision’ sensor, otherwise referred to as a Time of Flight (ToF) sensor which is used for AR.

With the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, the camera department becomes quite interesting. While the telephoto lens is just 48MP, the ultra-wide lens is still at 12MP, the wide-angle lens has been bumped all the way up to a 108MP lens. As for the selfie cam, its sitting at a casual 40MP.

This is a huge leap compared to last year’s S10+ which only had a 12MP telephoto, a 12MP wide-angle and 16MP ultra-wide rear setup (plus ToF on the 5G model) and a 10MP front-facing camera.

The company is really pushing that the Samsung Galaxy S20 series cameras are really better than before. In addition to the greater image resolution that more megapixels offer, its also going after the the top spot when it comes to zoom.

This feature has been dubbed as ‘Space Zoom technology’, stated to combine hybrid optical zoom of the lens setup with AI-powered digital zoom to get better results. The Samsung Galxy S20 and S20+ will get the 30x zoom. As for the S20 Ultra… the zoom of the device device could apparently reach up to 100x. That’s quite far if true.

‘Single Take’ is another interesting feature of the S20 series. The S20s are capable of caturing multiple photos in one shot or video. Basically, this means that they can simultaneously capture one shot as cropped, as a live focus and another in ultra-wide, you get a variety of options without having to compose and re-shoot. The ‘Single Take’ function is also available with video mode.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 series will be able to shoot in 8K, which makes sense since most media device manufacturers are already pushing hard for 8K TVs. In fact, the S20s boasts being able to stream 8K phone footage to a UHD 8K TV. They will also all have ‘Super Steady’ image stabilization, that uses AI motion analysis to stabilise video recording.

Here are all the main specifications for the entire range.
