SUPREME

The Supreme Leigh Bowery Spring 2020 collection is dropping soon. It will be featuring the Aussie Leigh Bowery, one of the most iconic performance artists in London during the 1980s. Bowery used his body as a canvas to portray what it meant to push boundaries through his eye-catching fashion and intriguing art.

Leigh Bowery was the famous androgynous feature of London’s alternative nightlife, known for his uniqueness and subversion. “He liked to create chaos around him, and with Taboo (Bowery’s subversive short-lived party) he created a scene where there were no rules,” stated by Boy George.

Notably throughout Leigh Bowery’s life, the performance artist designed costumes and performed for the dance company of Michael Clark. He also collaborated with Lucian Freud for nude artworks, of which are considered amongst Freud’s major pieces. His performances grew increasingly outrageous, his art in 1993, Bowery “gave birth” to his assistant and wife Nicola Bowery, who burst from his attire covered in slime and using sausages as the umbilical cord. Supreme says: “With all facets of his life and work, Bowery sought to disrupt and stimulate.”

In 1994, at the age of 33, Leigh Bowery died from complications caused by AIDS. Although young, the Aussie performance artist, fashion designer and nightlife icon outperformed and definitely ahead of his time, left an major impact that lives on in galleries, runways and nighhtclubs.

The Supreme Leigh Bowery collection includes a longsleeve shirt, two hoodies and a T-shirt, with art of Bowery by Jim Krewson (the longsleeve shirt and hooded sweatshirt are in airbrush style graphic), Fergus Greer (art on hooded sweatshirt), and Michael Costiff (portrait of Bowery on T-shirt). Portion of the proceeds from this Leigh Bowery x Supreme collection will benefit Visual AIDS, a arts organization based in New York City that assists artists living with HIV/AIDS, and engages with HIV issues through the arts.
