Tom Cruise’s latest film, Top Gun: Maverick, has achieved a highly desirable feat. It has officially crossed the $1 billion threshold at the global box office. It is also the first time any movie of the actor has grossed $1 billion in his long and successful career.

Though Top Gun: Maverick was released about a month ago, it still shows no sign of slowing down. Accompanying Top Gun: Maverick is Baz Luhrmann-directed film Elvis as that film is also earning huge. Both films are trying to get to the No. 1 spot at the weekend domestic box office, and both are expected to bring in $30.5 million.

Top Gun: Maverick has had a tremendously good start also. It broke the Memorial Day weekend domestic box office record and got a $156 million opening. Pirates of the Caribbean previously held this record: At World’s End for 15 years.

The debut of two summer blockbusters, Jurassic World Dominion and Lightyear, hasn’t even slowed down the craze for Top Gun: Maverick. It’s the first time a movie starring Tom cruise has achieved the $1 billion goal. The previous high mark was $791.1 million, and it was held by his 2018’s Mission Impossible: Fallout.

Top Gun: Maverick is doing very well at the Australian box office. It has taken $64.16 million and has become the fifth highest-grossing movie locally. It beat Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Avengers: Infinity War, Titanic, and The Lion King this past weekend. Even during the previous weekend, Top Gun: Maverick overtook Bohemian Rhapsody.

The films ahead of Top Gun: Maverick are Avatar, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. There are many reasons for Top Gun: Maverick’s success. First are the strong reviews, and the second is stronger word of mouth. Even repeat viewing by fans is a strong reason. The practical stunts in the film are also quite riveting.

The story of Top Gun: Maverick revolves around Cruise’s character’s return to the elite fighter jet pilot squadron. He returns to train a new generation for a near-impossible mission. This film was postponed several times during the pandemic, and the massive success means that Paramount’s decision was quite right.
