A rare Patek Philippe watch, the mythical ‘Silk Road’ cloisonné enamel dial Patek Philippe ref. 2523 has just smashed two world records over the weekend. It set the record of getting the highest price at an auction as a yellow gold wristwatch, and it also made a new record high for this specific model. The model was sold for $7.8 USD million (About $9.95 AUD million).

It was the first of eleven Ref. 2523 models that were made. It was also among three models that featured a depiction of the European landmass. The rare Patek Philippe watch has two crowns and an immaculate cloisonné enamel dial. One of the crowns winds the watch, and the second controls the city ring. The latter is a unique feature that lets a wearer calculate the current time in 40 cities that are listed around the circumference of the watch.

Another appealing thing about the rare Patek Philippe watch is that it is powered by time only 12-ligne movement, i.e., 12-400 that is personally modified by Louis Cottier, who is the inventor of the world time system.

Alexandre Ghotbi, head of Europe and the Middle East, and Aurel Bacs, Phillips’s senior consultant, spoke about the rare Patek Philippe watch in a joint statement. They said, “This result demonstrates the appetite across the international market for uber-rare museum-quality watches and Phillips’ ability to bring such horological grails to the market.”

In addition to the rare Patek Philippe watch, A platinum Nautilus, Ref. 5711P was also sold for over half a million USD (over $800,000 AUD). It proved that no matter whether a Patek Philippe watch is old or new, it will always manage to pull in the big bucks.
