Ben Affleck plays the role of a drunk in The Way Back trailer. It’s a sports drama where he portrays the character of Jack Cunningham, a construction worker who likes to drink alcohol at every opportunity be it the shower, at the work, or at his home. His drunk routine is interrupted when he is asked to coach a high school basketball team.

Ben Affleck character was a star of the same team, and he gets the job when the previous coach dies due to a heart attack. He takes the gig to stay busy and keep his mind off other stuff. His character can be seen saying “It keeps me busy. Keeps my mind off of other things.”

In another shot, he tells a player of the team that “The reason they’re leaving you open is you can’t hit the ocean from the beach.” One shot shows an inebriated Jack while Ben Affleck voiceover says “I spent a lot of time hurting myself. I made a lot of bad decisions. I have a lot of regrets.”

It is apparent that one of the reasons he gets drunk so often is to avoid his past. His wife (Janina Gavankar) can be seen saying “I know you’re suffering. I just want you to be happy again. But you’ve got to want it, too.”

The timing of The Way Back trailer is quite interesting. It was dropped around a year from the day when Ben Affleck shared details about completing a short stay (40 days) at a treatment centre for alcoholism.

The actor posted the trailer on Twitter and wrote this beside it. “So proud of this one and the incredible team behind it. Here’s your first look at #TheWayBack, a story of endurance and redemption. In theatres this March.”

The film was earlier known as Torrance and The Has-Been. It is produced by Ben Affleck, Ravi Mehta, Jennifer Todd, Gordon Gray, and Gavin O’Connor. The latter is also directing the film. The script is by Brad Ingelsby. It stars Al Madrigal, Brandon Wilson, Hayes MacArthur, and Rachael Carpani as well.

Gavin O’Connor and Ben Affleck last worked in The Accountant, a 2016 drama and the actors’ last projects were Justice League (as Batman) and Triple Frontier, an action-adventure film by Netflix. In addition to The Way Back, he will be busy with The Last Thing He Wanted and Deep Water in 2020. The actor has been quite choosy when it comes to picking new projects after the immense success and world-wide recognition he got for playing Batman.
