Chris Hemsworth to Take a Break from Acting Due to This Reason
Chris Hemsworth wanted to go public to increase understanding and awareness of the disease.
Thor actor Chris Hemsworth is taking a break from acting. The reason is that he recently learned he has a high risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. He learned about it after undergoing some tests as part of his Disney+ documentary series, Limitless.

Talking about it, Hemsworth said that the tests confirmed his “biggest fear.” He also stated that he will now be trying to take “preventative steps.” The actor has learned that he has two copies of the gene ApoE4. One of these is from his mother, and one from his father. So, he is between eight and ten times more likely to develop the disease as compared to people without both copies of the gene. Only 2 to 3 per cent of the population carries two copies of this gene.
Hemsworth stated, “It’s not like I’ve been handed my resignation.” He said the news “really triggered something in me to want to take some time off.” He added, “If you look at Alzheimer’s prevention, the benefit of preventative steps is that it affects the rest of your life. It’s all about sleep management, stress management, nutrition, movement, fitness. It’s all kind of the same tools that need to be applied in a consistent way.”
Clarifying that he is not diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease yet, Hemsworth stated, “It’s not a pre-deterministic gene, but it is a strong indication. Ten years ago, I think it was more thought of as determinant.”
Talking about leaving the MCU for good, Hemsworth said, “Look, I’m completely open to it, if there is something unique and fresh and unexpected to do with the character and the world… I think there’d be more to say if the people want to hear me say it. I feel like we’d probably have to close the book if I ever did it again, you know what I mean? I feel like it probably warrants that. I feel like it’d probably be the finale, but that’s not based on anything anyone’s told me or any sort of plans.”
He added, “You have this birth of a hero, the journey of a hero, then the death of a hero, and I don’t know — am I at that stage? Who knows?” Hemsworth plans to go home to Byron Bay in Australia, where he wants to spend time with his partner, actor Elsa Pataky, and their three children.
