Doctor Who: New Actor Revealed In BBC Surprise
Ncuti Gatwa is the Fourteenth Doctor of Dr. Who.

The world’s longest-running TV series, Doctor Who, has a new doctor. The BBC has officially shared the name of the fourteenth doctor, and it’s none other than Ncuti Gatwa. He will be the star of the show when Jodie Whittaker leaves. In the science fiction series, regeneration is the key. The Doctor regenerates into a new form whenever a star leaves, and the series relaunches itself.

In addition to Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker, current showrunner Chris Chibnall will also be leaving the popular show. Russell T. Davies, who was undoubtedly the mastermind behind the 2005 revival, will be returning as showrunner. The production of the show will probably begin later this year.

Ncuti Gatwa is the next Dr. Who star

Ncuti Gatwa is a Bafta award-winning actor who has appeared in shows like Sex Education, The Last Letter from Your Lover, and Barbie. An official press release regarding the reveal included a statement from Gatwa. It read:

“There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited, and, of course, a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same. Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground. The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show. And so as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart, but I am giving it all to this show.”

Davies stated that Gatwa was cast based on the strength of his audition. “Sometimes talent walks through the door, and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars. Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor, and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds.”

Gatwa has also made Doctor Who history as he is the first Doctor to be born outside the U.K. His parents moved from Rwanda as refugees when he was only a baby, and he grew up in Scotland. Ncuti Gatwa is best known for playing the part of Eric in Sex Education. He got Best Actor in the 2020 Scottish BAFTA Awards and Performance of the Year at the 2020 Rose d’Or Awards for the role.

This announcement by BBC ended speculation that’s been going on for a year. Whittaker’s departure from Doctor Who was rumoured about early last year, and since then, fans have wondered who will replace him. After the announcement, the BBC is expected to maintain radio silence for some time as they focus on the upcoming Doctor Who Centenary Special released in October. The special will mark the end of Whittaker’s tenure and include a regeneration scene that will presumably show Gatwa’s debut in Doctor Who.
