Facebook and Oculus have been working hard to make more comfortable virtual reality glasses for a while now. It seems that their latest VR headsets could be the breakthrough option as they look like a normal pair of sunglasses. Read more about them below.

Facebook Reality Labs has developed a proof of concept device which uses holographics with flat films for the optics. As a result, the displays are far lower than the 0.35 inches mark. They are also smaller than usual OLED or LCD shining through glass. It is partially possible due to polarization-based optical folding, which moves the light back and forward multiple times and shrinks it below the original volume.

Facebook is planning to make the virtual reality glasses even better by improving the resolution to the limit of human vision. The company wants to eliminate visible pixels as well. The company is also hoping for vivid imagery and a wider colour range when the technology is ready.

As the design of these virtual reality glasses is very unrefined, it would be a long time before you can think of trying a finished product. Facebook will need to resolve many challenges like colour output, device connections, battery life, and compatibility with traditional eyeglasses before it launches these virtual reality glasses.

Facebook, which recently set up a Facebook Oversight Committee, has talked about these virtual reality glasses via its research in the Siggraph 2020 paper that is entitled “Holographic Optics for Thin and Lightweight Virtual Reality.” The company has also made it clear that the work at present is purely research only.

If these virtual reality glasses do become a reality, it would be the next big step for Facebook Gaming that had 700 million active users in November last year. They would also be pretty expensive and would cost a lot. Still, it is likely that these VR glasses will be less expensive than other VR glasses present today. They are also likely to be more comfortable and cool looking than any VR glasses that you can buy today.
