Ferrari SF90 Spider

Ferrari never ceases to amaze the car lovers, and the brand has done it once again. Ferrari’s fastest series-production supercar, the Ferrari SF90 has lost its roof (well, sort of). The development of the Ferrari SF90 Spider droptop version happened 18 months after the debut of the hardtop Ferrari SF90 Stradale plug-in hybrid.

The main goal behind this new move by Ferrari seems simple enough. It is clear that the brand wants to make sure that the amazing performance that comes with the SF90 Spider’s Retractable Hard Top (RHT) is maintained while also ensuring that it doesn’t interfere with cooling and aerodynamics when the roof is retracted.

The RHT design was preferred instead of the regular canvas roof with the aim to prevent deformity at speed as well as to enhance the packaging efforts. The fold-away action can be completed in less than 14 seconds and needs only 100L of storage space.

While transforming SF90’s Spider, the aerodynamic efficiency was carefully managed by the brand. It has added long louvres to the rear windows. These have replaced the rear ducts that were found on SF90 Stradale. The SF90 Spider will still have the same shut-off Gurney suspended rear spoiler design that was found on the hardtop version.

To make things interesting, Ferrari has completely redesigned the cooling circuit of the brake system. The unique brake callipers of the roofless Ferrari SF90 now have an integrated aero-fin that distributes the charged air more effectively to cool the brakes.

Performance of the droptop Ferrari SF90 is the same as the hardtop version. It has a 574kW/800Nm 3.9-litre turbocharged V8 engine, that is enhanced with a triplet of electric motors which can generate 162kW. Hence, the total output is 745kW or 1000hp. The 0-100km/h speed can be achieved in 2.5 seconds, 0-200 km/h can be done in 7 seconds, and the Fiorano lap time is of 1:19.5.

The new Ferrari SF90 Spider

The open top Ferrari SF90 Spider will have a new central aerodynamic element that will be situated between the driver and passenger, to ensure the prevention of in-cabin air turbulence with the roof down. In the US, it will be released at the end of 2021, and the cost might be USD 558,000 (about AUD 770239.76). The Australian release and pricing details have not been shared yet.
