Hermès is Releasing a Vegan Bag Made From Mushrooms

Hermès is known for high-end leather products. However, now the well-esteemed company is launching a vegan bag. This bad is made from mushrooms, rather than regular leather that comes from animals.

To achieve this, Hermès partnered up with MycoWorks, a Californian start-up. The purpose was to develop a sustainable alternative to leather. And this gave rise to the new vegan bag, something that vegans would prefer.

Referred to as Sylvania, this new fabric is “the exemplar of a new generation of biotech materials” according to official reports. It took almost three years for Hermès and MycoWorks to bring this dream into a reality.

 

Now, the start-up has received a patent for its new Fine Mycelium technology. The prime idea behind this vegan bag is simple. It constitutes a network of mycelium (filaments found in fungus), in such a way that it resembles regular leather.

Along with that, the mycelium filaments in this vegan bad feature an interlocking structure that gives them durability and strength.

 

This new fabric will be made by MycoWorks solely in California. Then, it will be shipped to the Hermès warehouses that are located in France. This is where the experts will give the final touches to the faux leather and stitch it into a vegan bag. Finally, the product will roll into the market.

Regarding the production of the vegan bag, Pierre-Alexis Dumas, the artistic director at Hermès said, “With Sylvania, Hermès is at the heart of what it has always been: innovation in the making.”

 

Based on reports, this vegan bag by Hermès will be available to buy in the markets near 2021’s end. Though, note that the company is not planning to entirely switch its focus from leather to faux leather.

Hermès will continue to make high-quality leather products like it always has. After all, the company has built a strong reputation in this area.

 

However, the company will continue to promote sustainable products such as vegan bags and possibly other alternatives in the future. will allow Hermès to target the vegan buyers along with their regular audiences.
