HBO has been looking for new ways to attract the viewers since the end of Game of Thrones this year. Though it got success with some other shows, it was not long-lasting. It seems that the latest fantasy series, His Dark Materials by the premium cabler is finally the answer to all the viewership woes. It fetched 700,000 viewers for HBO and we are sure that it made some big shots very happy.

For those of you who haven’t watched it yet, His Dark Materials is based on Philip Pullman’s trilogy, His Dark Material books. It drew 424, 000 viewers for its first airing and the replay and same night streaming took the number to 700, 000.

His Dark Materials has proven to be at par the popular Chernobyl series as the former got best Monday premiere across all platforms since May when the latter was popular. His Dark Materials might prove to be more successful than Chernobyl in the long run as Chernobyl got popular over time, but His Dark Materials has gained a fan base on the premier itself.

Streaming and replay boosted His Dark Materials audience by around 65 per cent, which is far less than Succession that had a 96 per cent bump. Watchmen series had 87.5 per cent, Big Little Lies had 76 per cent, and Euphoria had 70 per cent. Still, it’s higher than The Righteous Gemstones that had a 42 per cent bump and the final season premiere of Game of Thrones that had a 47.5 per cent bump.

His Dark Materials has also impressed the UK audience as it drew 7.2 million viewers on BBC One. It is the biggest audience for a drama series debut when compared to the stats of the last 5 years.

The series stars Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua, James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, Ruth Wilson as Mrs Coulter and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby. It’s produced by Bad Wolf and New Line Cinema.
