LeBron James is not just wowing people with his exceptional play on the court, he is also making people gawk by choosing a unique watch. While watching his team take on Boston Celtics last Thursday, he was seen wearing the Audemars Piguet’s new Royal Oak Concept “Black Panther” Flying Tourbillon (ref. 26620IO.OO.D077CA.01). It was a treat for the fans who returned to LA’s Staples Center for the first time during this season.

As LeBron James is suffering a high ankle sprain, he was not playing the match. There are a few reasons why he wore the Audemars Piguet’s “Black Panther” Flying Tourbillon watch. First is that the purple rubber strap of the watch matches one of the two primary colours of Lakers. Another could be the fact that it has Black Panther on the dial. The watch also has a 42mm case, Calibre 2965, black ceramic bezel, and a hand-wound mechanism.

The Black Panther engraved on the watch is standing over at 6 o’clock, crafted from white gold, and has been laser carved and hand painted. One look at the Black Panther, and you will think about the beloved character portrayed by the late Chadwick Boseman in the MCU movies.

The Audemars Piguet watch worn by LeBron James has a sapphire crystal cashback, titanium geometric bridges, 72-hour power reserve, and costs about CHF 150,000 (AUD 211,000). Only 250 examples of the watch worn by LeBron James are available now.

For those who are unaware, LeBron James is also a former ambassador of the brand and remains a friend too. He was even present at the virtual press event where the Audemars Piguet watch was announced. The Black Panther is the first in a long line of character watches that AP plans in collaboration with Marvel.

There are a few reasons why the watch worn by LeBron James is quite controversial. The first is that it is unusual for a high-end brand like Audemars Piguet to create a character watch. Cheaper watch brands like Citizen usually do it. Another reason is that, the Black Panther model could be a poor choice considering the death of the actor who played the MCU character. It is unclear whether the new watch is a tribute to his memory or just a cash-grab. Speaking of watches, have you had a look at our top picks from the Watches and Wonders event?
