Netflix has a recent success with the intensely violent Korean drama, Squid Game. As you might expect, the streaming platform is going to cash in on this opportunity soon with a Season 2. The signs are good enough.

Squid Game Season 2

In an interview with The Times, Hwang Dong-Hyuk noted that if he were to develop Season 2 of Squid Game, he would like to explore “the issue with police officers.” He also added, “While I was writing season one, I thought about the stories that could be in season two if I get to do one—one would be the story of the Frontman.” The potential new season would presumably focus on the Frontman being a former police officer and how it lead to his role in the first season.

“I think the issue with police officers is not just an issue in Korea. I see it on the global news that the police force can be very late on acting on things—there are more victims or a situation gets worse because of them not acting fast enough. This was an issue that I wanted to raise. Maybe in season two I can talk about this more, said Hwang Dong-hyuk.”

Also in a recent interview with Vulture, the Global Head for Netflix, Bela Bajaria, said there was a potential for a Season 2. However, a new season of Squid Game hasn’t been officially announced yet. Bajaria also mentioned that a lot depends on the schedule of creator Hwang Dong-hyuk and his desire of how he would want to proceed.

She said, “He has a film and other things he’s working on. We’re trying to figure out the right structure for him.” She also mentioned that there is a possibility that other writers might also come on board for Season 2.

The Chief Content Officer of Netflix, Ted Sarandos, stated that Squid Game is about to become the biggest ever series for Netflix. It was also said that there was also a chance that series might surpass Bridgerton as the biggest launch in the history of the streaming platform.

Talking about the surprise element of Squid Game, Bajaria said “We could not imagine that it would be this big globally. We always knew it was going to be a signature title for Korea, but there’s no way to have anticipated it would be this big.”

Bajaria also mentioned that the show had become such a huge hit due to organic fandom as Netflix did not promote the series outside of Korea. It was also highlighted that Netflix subscribers used social media platforms to create a buzz for Squid Game.

She said, “People hear about it, people talk about it, people love it, and there’s a very social aspect to that, which does help grow the show outside of what we do.”

All this makes it clear that a Season 2 is highly probable. It is not the first time Netflix has expanded a product that is successful across the globe. It did the same with the Spanish heist series Money Heist (La Casa de Papel). It originally aired on Spanish network Antena 3. Netflix bought it, rebranded it and now its 5th season is going on.
