NSW COVID Outbreak Leads to Many Changes on Border Restrictions

The recent outbreak in NSW COVID cases has made many states rethink about their border restrictions. Here’s what’s the status at the moment.

ACT

ACT govt has stated that anyone who comes from Sydney from midnight onwards must self-declare and quarantine. Anyone who is not an ACT resident and wants to enter the territory from Sydney won’t be allowed to enter. People who are returning from Canberra would be allowed entry, but they must self-quarantine at home. The government is also keeping an eye on NSW COVID situation and has created strategies that will be implemented if the situation worsens.

Northern Territory

The Blue Mountains and Greater Sydney were declared as coronavirus hot spots. So, if someone enters the Norther Territory from these locations would need to undergo a supervised quarantine that would cost AUD 2500.

Queensland

Greater Sydney is considered as a hotspot and from 1 am Monday, anyone who has been to Greater Sydney would not be allowed to enter the state (there will be some exceptions). Queensland has also policed all road entry points with NSW from 6 am on December 22.

South Australia

From midnight on Sunday, people who arrive from Greater Sydney from South Australia would need to quarantine for 14 days. Anyone from Northern Beaches won’t be allowed to enter South Australia. People who are from regional NSW would need to undergo a test mainly due to NSW COVID outbreak.

Tasmania

People from Greater Sydney who enter Tasmania would need to quarantine for 14 days. Travellers from Northern Beached will not get an entry if they are not an essential traveller or a Tasmanian resident.

Victoria

From 11:59 pm on Sunday, Central Coast and Greater Sydney would be classed as Red zone. People from these zones would need to complete a 14-day long hotel quarantine. Victorian residents who have been to these locations will get to quarantine at home if they return before midnight on Monday.

Western Australia

As of Saturday night, Western Australia has decided to reinstate the hard border with NSW primarily due to the NSW COVID outbreak. So, no person is allowed to enter. People who entered from NSW from Friday, December 17 are already being asked to undergo 14-day isolation.

NSW

New restrictions have been adopted post NSW outbreak. Residents in Central Coast and Greater Sydney, Blue Mountains, and Illawarra-Shoalhaven can have more than ten people at home. From 5 pm Saturday to midnight on Wednesday, residents of the Northern Beaches must stay at home and not leave unless it’s vital. People from other states are also not allowed to enter unless it’s essential.

It’s quite clear that the NSW COVID outbreak has spoiled many holiday plans. These new restrictions would help with avoiding a COVID cluster and make people stick to their homes until COVID-19 vaccine finally arrives. Things will have been different if NSW COVID situation hasn’t been so bad.
