OnlyFans is Banning Porn Content After a Shocking BBC Investigation

OnlyFans recently stunned all its fans by announcing that it will ditch the thing that got it fame – porn and sexual content like photographs or videos. The ban will begin on October 1, 2021. Reports suggested that the changes come after mounting pressure from banking partners and payment providers. Aside from that, it is believed that this ban was initiated as a side effect of an ongoing investigation by BBC that revealed some shocking aspects of the company.

OnlyFans

BBC’s investigation into the activities of OnlyFans revealed that the company was knowingly letting the users get away after publishing illegal content on the web. When OnlyFans moderators discovered illegal content, they didn’t ban the account or sounded an alarm. They only issued one of the three warnings that stated why the content was removed. The creators who had more subscribers were given more warnings. Also, the most successful creators were handled by a different team.

OnlyFans tried to justify its actions by saying that the compliance manuals that are a piece of key evidence in the BBC investigation are not official guidance. BBC responded by saying that one of the COO’s of OnlyFans was listed as making edits to the document.

The BBC investigation also revealed that it had also scoured the site for illegal content and watched a few videos that showed exploitation of homeless people. The investigators also spoke to a few OnlyFans moderators and quoted a US Homeland Security agent who mentioned how many child abuse images originate from there. BBC went ahead and also tested to see if OnlyFans would notice accounts owned by young teenagers who offered photos for sale (by creating fake accounts). OnlyFans failed to notice until BBC itself highlighted it.

OnlyFans remained unavailable for comment on the ban till the time of publishing this article.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how sex workers earn a living. Many performers relied on websites like OnlyFans to earn revenue. Some experts are labelling such people as porntropreneurs. Likely, people who earned well selling sexually explicit content on OnlyFans need to look for another source of income.
