The ‘New’ DeLorean DMC-12 is Officially Making a Comeback!
The Back to the Future car will be dropping in the near future
In a time where futuristic vehicle designs are flooding the market with the likes of Tesla’s Cybertruck, Mercedes-Benz’s Vision AVTR and Lamborghini’s Lambo V12 Vision GT, DMC is planning to go the other way and do a throwback. The DeLorean DMC-12 is officially making a comeback. The iconic vehicle impressed people during the Back to the Future series that released in the 80s but it faded with time primarily due to the legal and financial issues faced by the company, and its owner John DeLorean.
Most car enthusiasts will know that DeLorean DMC-12 was earlier planned for release in 2016, but the plans were abruptly halted after the presidential elections impacted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from implementing the Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act. This not only affected DMC in the production of the DeLorean DMC-12, but the situation also halted other low-volume vehicle production companies as well.
The Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act is now a reality primarily due to the Specialty Equipment Market Association that sued the US Dept of Transportation. So, the road is clear for DeLorean DMC-12.
The Vice President of DMC, James Espey, shared that there are still doubts regarding the efficiency of US government, which might play a key role in releasing the DeLorean DMC-12. Talking to Hagerty, he said, “There will be no cars produced under this legislation for at least a year, and that’s presuming the feds do their job this time and don’t drag it out for four more years.”
Espey also highlighted that the review by the Office of Management and Budget might take six months and other factors like NHTSA getting an administrator before the 2020 Presidential elections would play a key role in deciding the release date of DeLorean DMC-12.
Mainly due to these doubts, DMC has not opened order books till now and plans to make one or two cars a week even though the Act allows the manufacturer to create 325 cars in a year. If the legal hassles don’t come in the way, the DeLorean DMC-12 will be released quickly as the warehouse is full of 3.5 million parts.
Like your favourite movie reboots, the DeLorean DMC-12 might have a better interior than planned, which might include features like heated & cooled seats, Bluetooth integration, navigation, smartphone integration, ABS, modern headlights, power steering, traction control and cruise control. The engine is expected to produce 260kW power. The possibility of an electronic motor is also there. The price could be around USD 100,000 (about AUD 147972) which is not too high for super-rich people who are fans of epic nostalgia.
