Car enthusiasts who thought Roll-Royce Cullinan Black Badge was cool have something new to look forward to. Tesla Cybertruck is finally here, and the design looks straight out of a science fiction movie. But, it’s not the design people are swooning over, it’s the incredible specs.

The future of electric vehicles are pickup trucks as everyone from start-ups like Rivian to big brands like Ford is turning to it. As usual, Tesla and Elon Musk are one step ahead as the electric automaker unveiled Tesla Cybertruck at the Tesla Design Centre in Los Angeles a while back.

Though the design of the Tesla Cybertruck indicates that the vehicle was expected to be indestructible, things changed when a stage malfunction proved otherwise. As expected, Musk was left red-faced.

It was revealed at this time because Musk loves Blade Runner. To date, the entrepreneur has made claims regarding what it can do. He said it can outperform a Porsche 911, out-truck a Ford F-150, be bulletproof and would cost about USD 50,000 which comes around to AUD 73, 674. The Tesla Cybertruck was also labelled as “the official truck of Mars.”

Talking about sustainable energy and Tesla’s new pickup, the not so modest Musk said “Trucks have been the same for a very long time. We wanted to show you something different… and we need sustainable energy now.”

He also built the anticipation for Tesla Cybertruck by saying that it looks like a kit car and is made of angular stainless steel which is believed to be resistant to bullets and hammer blows. He added that the glass is impact resistant too. Sadly, the latter was proven wrong during the on-stage demonstration of Tesla Cybertruck as the glass shattered not once, but twice!

The Specs

The most impressive thing about Tesla Cybertruck till now is its specs. It has a 14,000-pound tow claim, 3,500-pound payload claim, adaptive air suspension and three ranges, 200, 300 and 500 miles. The cost of Tesla Cybertruck is a bit high. The base price is USD 39,900 or AUD 58,792. The max range version that has three electric motors would cost around USD 69,900 or AUD 102,996.

It is claimed that the performance of the base model from 0 to 60 mph or 96 km/h is just 6.5 seconds. If it’s true, it the Cybertruck would be faster than a Volkswagen Amarok V6 or a Ram 1500 V8. The next step up in the Tesla Cybertruck range is claimed to have achieved 0 to 60 mph or 96 km/h in just 4.5 seconds. If it’s true as well, it will be faster than a Holden Commodore V8 Sedan or Volkswagen Golf R.

All the versions of the Cybertruck will have adaptive air suspension that ensures the vehicle has a low ride at freeway speeds that helps in slipping through the air and class-leading ground clearance when it comes to heading off-road. The Tailgate has a slide-out tray which doubles up as a ramp to load motorbikes or quad bikes. The rear suspension drops automatically when the tailgate opens.

People who prefer off-road will be pleased to know that the approach angle is claimed to be 35 degrees and the departure 28 degrees. The inside seating is enough to fit in six adults comfortably, and the dash boasts of a huge 17-inch touchscreen.

The production of the vehicle will be in late 2021, and the tri-motor version will happen in 2022 according to Musk.

Tesla’s Year So Far

Tesla has had a good year so far as the third quarter was profitable, and the crucial Shanghai Gigafactory has started producing cars. Also, the Model Y crossover was revealed, and though it doesn’t cost USD 35,000 or AUD 51,572, the Model 3 sedan is doing well. Tesla Cybertruck will probably help the company to keep up the momentum.

Tesla fans are still waiting for the widespread adoption of Solar Roof, Semi, the new Roadster and many other promises.

The presentation of Tesla Cybertruck was not impressive because most of the presentation felt it was half-baked and awkward. But its specs have got people talking.

Value for Money?

Musk expects Tesla Cybertruck to be popular in the US and make financial sense too as the people who own it would need to pay less money for electricity as compared to gasoline. He said that the US needs sustainable energy and an electric pick-up if the nation wants to address environmental issues.

Tesla has beaten Ford and General Motors on electric pick-ups as Tesla Cybertruck is here while their planned vehicles are still years away.

Tesla Cybertruck for the Aussies

There is no word yet on whether Tesla Cybertruck will come to Australia one day or whether there are plans to create right-hand drive variation of the pickup truck. But there is hope as Australia has been an export market for each model in Tesla line-up till now.

Until Tesla decides on bringing Tesla Cybertruck to the country, the locals can try Nissan Navara or Mitsubishi Triton’s hybrid versions. Toyota’s Hilux Ute might also adopt hybrid tech and keep customers happy until the Tesla Cybertruck is officially released in Australia.
