These New Gucci Sneakers Are Made With An Animal-Free Material

Debuting on the Basket, Rhyton and New Ace

Gucci is now making leather-free luxury sneakers. These new Gucci sneakers are made of Demetera, a revolutionary material that is just as good as leather. You will find this material on all the latest editions of the Basket, Rhyton, and New Ace sneakers by the fashion house.

 

It took about 2 years of research to develop this new material, in which up to 77% of the raw materials come from plants. This would be one of the most notable sustainable solutions by Gucci to date.

The material, Demetera is named after a Greek goddess of new harvest and agriculture. After all, that goes well in line with the brand’s focus on sustainability and plant-based leather alternatives. To be specific, this new Gucci material is composed of wood pulp, viscose, and a bio-friendly polyurethane.

According to the reports, Demetera is being produced at high-end manufacturing units of Gucci in Italy. To make sure that the final product is durable and soft, the material goes through the same processes as regular leather.

 

As of now, only Gucci will be using Demetera in its sneakers. However, the luxury fashion brand will let other brands use the material from 2022 and onwards. The Basket, Rhyton, and New Ace editions will be the first-ever sneakers to feature this new material.

However, along with Demetera, these Gucci sneakers will also feature organic cotton, polyester, and recycled steel. These other materials would be present in a very minute quantity, though.

 

According to Gucci, more items and shoes made with Demetera will show up soon. Regarding this, Marco Bizzarri, the CEO, and president of Gucci stated, “In our 100th anniversary year, Demetra is a new category of material that encapsulates Gucci’s quality and aesthetic standards with our desire to innovate, leveraging our traditional skills and know-how to create for an evolving future.”
