Tom Cruise and  Elon Musk’s SpaceX Aerospace company are collaborating with NASA to make the first  action movie shot in outer space.

The out of this world scoop was reported by Deadline, which stated that the film is in “early stages of liftoff.” The report also says that the new Tom Cruise movie will not be one of the next two Mission Impossible installments, but it will be an outer space action movie. No production studio is currently connected with the project.

NASA confirm the project Tuesday, adding that the Tom Cruise space action movie would take place aboard the International Space Station. “NASA is excited to work with @TomCruise on a film aboard the @Space_Station!” tweeted by NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine on Twitter.

“We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA’s ambitious plans a reality,” Bridenstine he added.

Elon Musk responeded with, “Should be a lot of fun!”, who recently made headlines for his tweets and having a child with his girlfriend, Grimes, an indie pop singer.

If Tom Cruise does end up filming an action movie aboard the Space Station, it wouldn’t be the first time he pulled off an extreme stunt on-screen. He already flew military helicopters and that P-51 Mustang fighter while filming Top Gun: Maverick (though he was not permitted by the U.S. Navy to fly an F-18).

And to capture those stomach-turning scenes in Mission Impossible: Fallout, Tom Cruise fearlessly jumped from an airplane at 200 mph at an altitude of 25,000 feet. In another scene of the same movie, Cruise broke his ankle after he leaped from a scaffold to the side of a building.

As for the release status of those upcoming Tom Cruise action flicks, audiences will now have to wait  until 24th of December to see Cruise reprise his role as US Naval aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick, the follow-up to the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun.

The release dates of the two upcoming Mission Impossible movies have also been pushed back by Paramount from 19th July, 2021 and 5th of August, 2022 to 19th of November, 2021 and 4th of November, 2022, respectively.
