Watch The Final Official Trailer of Netflix's The Witcher
The Witcher – Netflix

Netflix’s big-budget TV series adaptation of The Witcher (based on the series of fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski and not the popular video game series, confusingly also based on Sapkowski’s books) just released it’s final trailer to hype the series before its show date of 20th of December, 2019. And it actually looks quite impressive.

It’s no secret that in search of any fantasy series, studios have been looking at their bookshelves to adapt in an effort to fill the huge (and profitable) market that Game of Thrones recently vacated earlier this year. Netflix bets on The Witcher, starring Henry Cavill as the titular monster hunter, Geralt of Rivia.

It’s not a terrible idea, as The Witcher has already shown that it can make the jump from book to video game, and has a wide base of fans across the two platforms that are likely to be excited about the new Netflix show. On the other hand, one only needs to look at the last great adaptation of fantasy — the Harry Potter films — and the legions of failed TV series who tried to cash in on that success to see that Netflix is still going to have an uphill battle from here.

While the new trailer no longer shows the signature bathtub scene which has become one of the most popular memes of the game version, it still gives the best indication of the series ‘ range (which makes sense, considering that those flashier VFX sequences are actually complete a week away from release). There are epic battles, dark magic, and the appearance of Roach, Geralt’s horse, a fan-favorite character.

The Witcher premieres on Netflix on the 20th of December.
