Ricky Gervais is one of the most popular hosts of the Golden Globes who was well-known for his comic timing and was asked to host the award show four times between the period of 2010-2016. Award fans who have been missing his presence can rejoice now as he will be hosting the next Golden Globes awards that are to be held in 2020.

Gervais confirmed that he would be hosting 77th Annual Golden Globes ceremony that is set for January 5, Sunday on NBC. It is also confirmed that this will be his final appearance as a Golden Globes host because he won’t return to the role again. Confirming the news of his selection as the new host. Ricky Gervais said, “Once again, they’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse. But this is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening.”

The news of finalising Ricky Gervais as a host came at a time when many popular events are becoming host-less. The Academy Awards in February this year were host-less. Also, the Oscars were without a host too when previously announced host Kevin Hart had to step down due to a controversy. A few months later, in September, the Emmys were also held without a host.

Golden Globes is an important event that honours film and TV achievements across 25 different categories. It usually lasts three hours, and a live telecast is broadcasted from Beverly Hills. The most recent ceremony was hosted by popular actors Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh.

In addition to being a Golden Globes host previously, Ricky Gervais has also won a Golden Globe for his performance in an original UK series, The Office. With the fifth time as a host, he will hold the record of being the only performer who has hosted the Globes maximum number of times.

Ricky Gervais hosting has had some news-worthy moments also. He called Bruce Willis “Ashton Kutcher‘s dad” and was responsible for hanging shit on Johnny Depp. In 2016, he grabbed the headlines for dead-naming dig at Caitlyn Jenner. In 2017, he expressed the desire to host the ceremony again because there was a lot of joke material available.

We think the presence of Ricky Gervais as the host would make the ceremony interesting and memorable. Won’t you agree?
