A Friends Reunion Special is In the Works for HBO Max!

The fans of the Friends show have been waiting for a Friends reunion or a reboot (with probably new and old cast members) for what seems centuries now. Their wait seems to be finally ending as the latest reports state that a reunion with six original cast members is happening soon.

 

The hype regarding the Friends reunion began when Jennifer Aniston gave a hint via The Ellen DeGeneres show that something was in the works. More recently, Hollywood Reporter has reported that Friends was returning with all six original cast members.

Sadly, it’s not for a reboot or a second season. The Friends reunion would be one-off. It will be an unscripted special. It means that there will be no in-character-continuation of where the original Friends left off so many years ago. Reports say that this time, the fans will get to see a round table reflection of their time on the show, how it changed their lives and related stuff. The Friends reunion would last about an hour.

 

The aim of this Friends reunion is another strategy of HBO. It is believed that the reunion show is planned to promote awareness regarding the USD 425 million (over AUD 622 million) acquisition of streaming rights to Friends. As per the new deal, the show would not air on Netflix after the end of this year. After that, the show will be available on HBO Max for five years. Though Netflix tried to retain the show, the amount they proposed was too low as compared to the one offered by HBO Max folks.

The Friends reunion will feature Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Matt Leblanc, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer and Matthew Perry. The creators of the series, Marta Kauffman and David Crane will also return.

 

As the Friends reunion is in the initial stages, HBO Max and producers WBTV declined to comment. It is believed that the agreements with cast and creatives are yet to be hammered out. Fans should keep their fingers crossed till then. It is still probable that the reunion becomes a reality in 2020 or 2021 only.
