COVID-19 has truly transformed the list of the top 10 of the world’s most liveable cities by the Economist Intelligence Unit. Currently, Auckland makes it to the top. Where Vienna was on the top spot previously, it is not a part of the most liveable cities anymore.

For several years, Melbourne has remained on top of the list. However, the excellent response of the New Zealand government to COVID-19 resulted in it leading the survey. Of course, New Zealand’s isolated location made the elimination of the virus easier. Still, strict lock-down measures had a big role to play.

However, some New Zealanders do not consider Auckland and Wellington (also in the top 10) among the world’s most liveable cities. Both pose serious challenges to liveability. For instance, housing in both cities is the least affordable.

A median house in both cities could cost up to 1 million USD. Furthermore, the traffic in Auckland is perhaps the worst. At the same time, both the cities have struggled a lot with public transport and cycle lanes.

Another challenge for Wellington is that the houses are too damp and cold. Many people would not consider them liveable in the winter season. So, it might not be the one of most liveable cities in that aspect.

Regarding this, Ben McKay, a correspondent stated on Twitter, “it says everything about the state of the planet that Wellington could be ranked the fourth most liveable city in the world”.

The Economist Intelligence Unit mentioned that it is all due to the strict lockdown imposed in New Zealand. As a result of which, residents of New Zealand are enjoying a lifestyle just like the pre-pandemic times. And that is why they make it to the list of the most liveable cities.

While Auckland takes the first spot in the most liveable cities list, Australian cities Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne, and Brisbane take the 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 10th spot, respectively. Two Swiss cities on the most liveable cities list include Zurich and Geneva on the 7th and 8th spot.
