Disney and Marvel Studios have released Black Widow’s first official trailer, the prequel film following Scarlett Johansson‘s Natasha Romanoff before sacrificing herself to get the Soul Stone to defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. The script is from by Ned Benson and Jac Schaefer, and Cate Shortland is directing the movie.

Scarlett Johansson stated in a recent interview about how Black Widow will ultimately be about “family” and “self-forgiveness”:

“I don’t have a total perspective on it yet. It’s a film about self-forgiveness. It’s a film about family. I think, in life, we come of age many times in your life and you have these moments where you’re kind of in a transitional phase and then you move sort of beyond it. I think in the Black Widow standalone film the character is […] at a moment of real crisis and throughout the film by facing herself in a lot of ways and all the things that make her her, she actually kind of comes through that crisis on the other side and is able to sort of re-set into a space where she’s a more grounded, self-possessed person. So, that’s her journey.”

Joining Johansson in the movie’s cast is David Harbour (Stranger Things) Florence Pugh (Midsommar),Rachel Weisz (The Favourite), and O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale). Black Widow’s plot details are still tightly under wraps, but Marvel Studios did confirm that Pugh will play Yelena Belova, a character who finally takes the name of Black Widow in the comics, and Harbour is playing Alexei Shostakov aka The Red Guardian. At Comic-Con 2019, we heard that Weisz is portraying yet another Black Widow, albeit one that has been through preparation and active duty assignments quite a few times.

The new Black Widow trailer definitely does not dissappoint. It kinda felt like it had a high bar to clear after so much hype and time passing between Comic-Con and now in December. The first real look at the Black Widow trailer teases a movie that has traces of spy movies that goes in the same theme of The Bourne Identity while retaining some MCU-fied humor (looks like Red Guardian is taking that role). We’re not going to lie, watching Johansson back in the saddle and leading her own movie is quite good;actually, it’s been a long time in the making. Watching her, Natasha aka Black Widow, take one last ride in the MCU for a story that is focused solely on her life that we’ll get to say our farewell to her feels quite good. As a final note, it seems that both the directing and the score in this movie will be two excellent aspects that we’re going to talk about more in-depth when the film actually comes out. What the first trailer reveals here indicates a very strong, capable vision that looks and sounds unlike anything we’ve seen elsewhere in the MCU.
