It has been eight long years since the master-piece Inception was released. In the recent anniversary events of Q&A at a Film4 Summer Screen, Michael Caine has perhaps spoiled the ending of Inception and added something to discuss among the Inception fans.

Spoiler Alert: If you have never watched Inception before and don’t want to get spoiled, stop reading.

That mind-blowing and mind-boggling ending has had fair share of discussions and arguments among its fans. In the ending scenes, Dom Cobb played by Leonardo DiCaprio finally returns to home and his father-in-law played by Caine is there for his return. He is reunited with his children. That’s where Christopher Nolan puts his spell of movie making: the totem which Cobb uses to distinguish dream from reality is seen spinning on top of the table, alluding to the possibility that may be it is still just a dream.

At the Q&A event mentioned above, Michael Caine has perhaps put an end to the possibilities. He said: “When I got the script of Inception, I was a bit puzzled by it and I said to him… ‘I don’t know where the dream is, I said ‘when is it the dream and when is it reality?’”. To which “[Nolan] said, ‘Well when you’re in the scene it’s a reality.’ So get that: if I’m in it, it’s reality. If I’m not in it, it’s a dream.”

For the Christopher Nolan movie enthusiasts, there have already been some theories about the ending of Inception where they had tried to establish that it indeed actually was a reality. Some proposed that the fact the top appears to waver in the final shot of the film, along with Cobb missing his wedding ring on his finger, and the fact that audience got to look at his children’s faces pointed toward the end being a reality.

Since this new claim by Michael Caine, it can also be added that Cobb’s father-in-law was in the scene, the debate can be put to an end finally that it indeed was reality. But it still could be open in air regardless of what Michael Caine has said recently as the issue is Caine is incapable to answer this question with certainty and the only person who could is Christopher Nolan.

While the man himself, Christopher Nolan has always preferred to leave the ending to the imagination of the audience. He has left the ending to remain subjective, subtle, and vague and has refused to answer any questions in that direction.

So what do you think of it? What is your theory about the ending of Inception? Was it a dream? OR was it indeed a reality?
