Sneaker collaborations have increased exponentially in the last few years. Most sportswear brands now make limited edition models by collaborating with a celebrity or a hot brand, creating just a few sneaker pieces, building hype around them, and making them hard to purchase. The result- the prices of sneakers skyrocket from the moment they are launched. Nike tried to make one of its collaborations hotter than others by Travis Scott x Fragment x Nike Air Jordan 1 Highs.

This collab made financial sense, and fans were eager for the drop. Sadly, the dop turned out to be a fiasco as the use of bots spoiled things for fans. Two individuals were behind making the drop a fiasco as they used raffle bots to generate about 55,000 raffle entries and got 100 pairs of sneakers created in collab with Travis Scott.

Both the individuals also used Twitter to brag about this achievement by sharing screenshots of the interface of the bot they had used. One of the individuals even claimed that they don’t even listen to Travis Scott’s music.

If the individuals are not lying, they can make some serious money. Each pair of sneakers that costs US$ 200 (About AUD 270) is selling for about USD 2,800 (About USD 3,793). But, of course, that is possible only if they have the sneakers and Travis Scott’s e-commerce team doesn’t cancel all the botted transactions.

This Travis Scott sneaker fiasco has also highlighted that botting is a big problem that makes the sneaker drops futile. Though botting is not illegal in the UK, the USA, or Australia, it is a problem for average customers who want to win a raffle or only get a pair and don’t have thousands of dollars lying around to buy a pair of sneakers.

The Travis Scott sneaker fiasco also highlights another problem- sneakers are not as affordable today as they were meant to be. The sudden increase in prices makes them inaccessible for most sneakerheads who don’t have a huge fortune lying around. It’s about time sneaker brands fix these problems.
