Most of us hate going for the grocery shopping at the beginning of the month but consider it as a necessary evil. Some of us have made the chore a bit exciting by either plugging in headphones when we shop or using the time to check emails, chat with friends or just scroll through Facebook. If you are one of such people, then you need to rethink your habits as using a smartphone for tasks other than shopping can make you fat (and make you sign up for those tedious Tabata training classes once again).

Research published in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science has revealed that if you do non-shopping related tasks on your smartphone like texting your sister or sending emails to a colleague, you might end up buying stuff that’s unhealthy and wasn’t on the shopping list. Unhealthy stuff, when bought in excess usually makes you fat.

This research is another eye-opener that has surfaced in recent times. The last one was the one that said not exercising is more dangerous than killer diseases.

The research also mentioned that if you use the smartphone only for shopping-related things like bringing up coupons or calculating prices, it won’t make you fat as you will probably be more focused.

Retailers and shop owners are smarter than you think because they are making you buy unwanted stuff by providing extra features like free Wi-Fi. Most of them might not care about what will make you fat because they are just interested in boosting their profit margins.

The research also highlighted that buying unwanted items that make you fat is not the only side effect of using a smartphone for unrelated stuff. You often forget to buy important stuff when you are involved in playing games on your smartphone or replying to your bosses’ emails. This means that you have to go for another shopping trip shortly.

We think that this research on how unwanted smartphone use while shopping can make you fat will help people to reduce their smartphone addiction and might also help them to be the smart consumers who buy everything that’s needed in one go and doesn’t buy anything unwanted or unhealthy.
