One of the main problems about the Game of Thrones issues from the fans’ side is that every project takes forever to get started. It is apparently the case with the upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off, House of Dragon. The story of the show is still in development after which stars will be cast, sets will be built, and finally, the shooting will begin. So, the fans can expect it to air sometime in 2022.

It was confirmed recently by Casey Bloys, HBO President of Programming. Bloys also highlighted why the focus is on House of the Dragon instead of Jane Goldman-penned prequel of Game of Thrones (a show that was nominated for 32 categories in the Emmys). In a conversation with Deadline, he said “In development, in pilots, sometimes things come together, sometimes they don’t. One of the things I think Jane took on beautifully, which was a challenge, there was a lot more role creation because she set hers 8,000 years before the [original] show, so it required a lot more. That is a big swing. One of the things about House of Dragons, there is a text, there is a book so that made it a little bit more of a road map for a series order.”

The text mentioned by Bloys is Fire and Blood by George R.R. Martin that was published in 2018 and will be the main inspiration for the show. The book is set 300 years before the events of the recent Game of Thrones series that aired on HBO. It touches on successive Targaryen rulers, including Aegon who conquered the seven kingdoms. Fire and Blood covers only the first half of the Targaryen dynasty. Another book is planned for the future that will cover the rest of the Targaryen history. So, the fans who have been waiting for the real ending of Game of Thrones can add this future book to the list of things to look forward to.

Bloys also confirmed that there HBO was considering other Game of Thrones spin-offs but now the focus is on House of the Dragon only. He said “For me for right now, I think getting House of the Dragon on the air will be the number one priority. There are no other blinking green lights or anything like that. Sometime down the road who knows, but there are no immediate plans. We are all focusing on House of the Dragon.”
