Missy Elliot’s Iconology is Every Hip-Hop Head’s Dream

It’s time to #ThrowItBack

Throw It Back – Missy Elliot

When it comes to music, we are blessed to have performers like Drake, Lil Nas X, and Lil Dicky who entertain us regularly. But one rapper that has always been close to our hearts is Missy Elliot. It’s been 14 long years since we last enjoyed her songs. The rapper made up for it by releasing Iconology recently and putting us in throwback mode.

Sharing a Tweet, she dropped a collection of new songs and wrote this – “Let’s #ThrowItBack to a time when music just felt good and made us want to dance.” She teased the new music news in April when she announced that she had finished work on a new project. For the uninitiated, her last album, The Cookbook was released in 2005 and is still quite popular on platforms like Apple Music.

While posting about Iconology, Missy Elliot also mentioned that the year has been tremendous for her. She is humbled and grateful. She thanked everyone for allowing her to smell the roses. The rapper also appreciated her fans for helping her be who she is and celebrating every milestone with her.

Missy Elliot’s Iconology has been co-produced by Wili Hendrix, Elliot, and Timbaland. The colourful video that stars Teyana Taylor is mesmerising. It shows plenty of dance moves with references to the past while looking at the future. We love those few minutes when she references her classic “Work It” while gifting her fans with a knowing wink when instructing her posse of dancers to flip and reverse it. She also appreciates the past and present MTV VMA Moon Man Statue when the icon is seen wearing a spacesuit and planting a Missy Elliot-initialled flag on the moon.

Though Throw is Back would certainly refresh sweet memories, it’s not the best song from the EP. That honour goes to DripDemeanor, which is undoubtedly a piece of untainted nineties-inspired R&B perfection.

Iconology Track List

1. “Throw It Back”
2. “Cool Off”
3. “DripDemeanor (Feat. Sum 1)”
4. “Why I Still Love You?”
5. “Why I Still Love You? (Acapella)”

We think Missy Elliot’s Iconology is the perfect way to spend your time bouncing to the banger beats this weekend.
