Assassin’s Creed 2 – Ubisoft

Netflix has cracked a deal with Ubisoft, a video game company to develop content based on the popular game series, Assassin’s Creed. The deal would include a live-action series, an anime series, and an animated series. Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik will serve as Executive Producers for the first series. The search for a showrunner is still on.

In an interview, Jason Altman who serves as the Head of Ubisoft Film & Television, Los Angeles said “For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the ‘Assassin’s Creed’ brand into an iconic franchise. We’re thrilled to create an ‘Assassin’s Creed’ series with Netflix, and we look forward to developing the next saga in the ‘Assassin’s Creed’ universe.”

The Vice President of Original Series for Netflix, Peter Friedlander, said “We’re excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that ‘Assassin’s Creed’ is beloved for. From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the bestselling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy.”

It is not the first time Netflix is trying live-action adaption of a game series. The streamer has already found success with The Witcher, starring Henry Cavill. It has also announced a live action take on Resident Evil in 2020 only.

Even Ubisoft is not new in the game. It has brought the sci-fi world to the screen by releasing a film adaption in 2016. Sadly, that film got a largely negative critical response.

Assassin’s Creed is a money generator for Ubisoft. The game became an instant hit with its launch in 2007. More than 155 million copies of various titles in the franchise have been sold till date. The open world gameplay explores the war between the rival secret orders of the Assassins and the Templars as they use advanced technology to access the genetic memories of “Assassins” in different periods from the past to hunt powerful artifacts called “Pieces of Eden”.

The Assassin’s Creed Netflix series may take place in the time-jumping saga. The media services provider and production company’s 10-second teaser suggests the live-action series could be inspired by the action-adventure video game’s Ezio trilogy. That game trilogy started back in 2009 with Assassin’s Creed 2, and was followed by Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood in 2010 and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations in 2011. The teaser’s soundtrack comes directly from “ Ezio’s Family,” the main theme of Assassin’s Creed 2 .
