Oscar Nominations 2020: The Shocking Snubs and Surprises
Joker

The 92nd Academy Awards are gaining a lot of media attention. First, people talked about them when it was confirmed that Oscars 2020 would go hostless. Now, people are talking about the awards as the nominations for the same were announced on Monday. As expected, Oscar nominations 2020 had some obvious choices and some shocking snubs and surprises. You can know the important ones here.

The Main Snubs

The main snubs during Oscar nominations 2020 include no Awkwafina for The Farewell, no Jennifer Lopez for Hustlers, no Adam Sandler for Uncut Gems, no Lupita Nyong’o for Us and no Beyoncé for the best original song from The Lion King.

Are Men Elite?

The best directors chosen during Oscar Nominations 2020 were all men. Women directors with marvellous skills were overlooked. Examples include Greta Gerwig for Little Women, Lorene Scafaria for Hustlers, Lulu Wang for The Farewell, Marielle Heller for A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood and Melina Matsoukas for Queen & Slim.

The Obvious Choices

Unsurprisingly, Joker got 11 nominations. The Irishman, 1917 and Once Upon a Hollywood followed with 10 nominations each. Seeing Joker leading the pack is not a surprise for anyone who has seen the gritty DC adaptation in a theatre as it’s more perfect than most people imagined it to be and has raised the bar for other DCEU films. 1917, The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood also hold their own and have managed to pick up almost every Oscar nomination expected by fans and critics.

The Pleasant Surprises

Cynthia Erivo got the first acting nomination of her career during the Oscar Nominations 2020. She got it for Harriet. She also had another for best song. Antonio Banderas also got his first Oscar nomination for Pain and Glory. Jonathan Pryce got it for The Two Popes, and his predecessor in the series, Anthony Hopkins also scored a nomination. He got it in the best supporting actor category. Florence Pugh got a nomination for Little Women. Honeyland became the first film ever that has been nominated in Documentary and the foreign-language category at the same time.
