After the unpredictable death of Luke Skywalker aka Mark Hamill, people have been sceptical about the future of Star Wars movies. When the popular Jedi died, people assumed that Rey would fill in his shoes. But now, it has been revealed that if Carrie Fisher had lived (she died suddenly in 2016), she would have been the last Jedi in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Todd Fisher, Carrie’s brother, said that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is using the unreleased material shot for the film, The Force awakens to show the character of General Leia. He said it was magical. He also said that she would have been the last Jedi in Star Wars Episode 9 if she had not died.

Talking to Yahoo, he said “They had eight minutes of footage. They grabbed every frame and analyzed it… and then reverse-engineered it and [got] it into the story the right way. It’s kind of magical.”

Sharing that how Leia would have turned into a Jedi warrior, he said “Leia was going to emerge as a full-fledged Jedi warrior, complete with her very own lightsaber. She was going to be the big payoff in this final film and that was what the intent was prior to her exiting. She was going to be the last Jedi, so to speak.” Like millions of Star Wars films fan, we wish Carrie Fisher could get a Hollywood star in the future.

Sharing details of Carrie’s or Leia’s age not being a barrier, Todd Fisher said “People used to say to me, ‘Why is it that Carrie never gets a lightsaber and chop up some bad guys,’…Obi-Wan, when he was in his prime, was Carrie’s age.”

Though this is not the first time Leia’s character arc in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has been discussed, but it is the first time it has been shared that Leia might have stepped away from her role of a military leader of the Resistance and taken on the role of a Jedi. The true fans of the Star Wars Saga have always known that if Leia wanted, she could have used the power of the Force to fight off her enemies.

The idea that Leia could have held the lightsaber and fought against her own son in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is exciting for many fans as it would mean that Rey didn’t have to do everything alone.

We also think that if Leia’s character was shown to possess and use more power than many assumed, it would have been a great medium to demonstrate true women empowerment as she and Rey could have joined forces to defeat Kylo or to bring him to the right side. For now, we just hope that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker won’t disappoint us. For that, we have to wait a few more weeks as the film hits the theatres on December 20 worldwide.
