The Oscars draw millions of people to their TV screens and have scores of celebrities preparing for attending an awards ceremony in style. This year was no different as we were all glued to the TV screen and most of the celebs looked ravishing. What most of us failed to guess was that Oscars 2019 was going to be a memorable event filled with many unique firsts! Read on to know what stumped us and what made us speechless during the event.

What’s the Rush?

As Oscars 2019 was a host-free event, it was evident that things were a bit rushed. The awards were given swiftly to ensure that the run time was short. A number of blockbusters got the attention and the awards to prove it. It includes sensations like Black Panther which obviously got a lot of technical awards and Bohemian Rhapsody, the film about the band Queen and it’s frontman, Freddie Mercury earned four Oscars, the most awards for a film.

The Highlights!

One of the highlights of the event was the moment when Best Actor Award was awarded to Rami Malek. It was his first for a central role. Another highlight of the show was Olivia Colman’s speech after winning the Best Actress award as she practically apologized to Glenn Close for winning.

Trump Gets the Highlight Again

No, the President of the US didn’t attend the event but enough comments were made on Trump administration’s immigration policies to make us think of him. It began with an early joke by Maya Rudolph. She said that Mexico is not paying for the wall. Then Malek took things along by referencing that he is a first-generation American as his parents are Egyptian immigrants. Spike Lee, who won an Oscar for adapted screenplay for the movie BlacKkKlansman shed light to the 2020 election and urged people to do the right thing by being on the right side of history.

History is Created

Black Panther - Marvel Studios

Ruth E. Carter and Hannah Beachler created history by winning awards for costume design and production design. They are the first African-American women to win in their respective categories. Mahershala Ali won an Oscar for Green book and became the second African-American actor who has won multiple Oscars, the first one is Denzel Washington.

Movies that Made a Difference

Green Book - Universal Pictures

Black Panther proved to be a worthy contender as soon as the ceremony began as it won two awards quickly (those won by Beachler and Carter). It was also honoured for the musical score. Roma earned the award for the best foreign-language film and its director, Alfonso Cuaron was honoured for cinematography and direction. Green Book won awards for screenplay and Best Supporting Actor. Free Solo topped the documentary feature category, and one of the filmmakers was so excited that he blurted out an expletive which was beeped instantly. Bohemian Rhapsody also won awards in sound and editing categories. Interestingly, no one thanked the filmmaker Bryan Singer probably because he was accused of sexual abuse in January and the wound is still fresh.

The award for Best Supporting Actress went to Regina King who cried a little while accepting the trophy.

Marvel’s Magic Continues

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse – Sony Pictures

Marvel’s world marked its presence at the Oscars 2019 as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won the award for the best-animated movie by beating tough contenders like Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet.

The Predicted and the Unforeseen

First Man

Predictably, the team which transformed Christian Bale into Dick Cheney in the movie Vice won in the makeup/hairstyling category. Unpredictably, the award for visual effects went to First Man.

The Entertainers

As Oscars 2019 had no host, the producers depended heavily on comedy and some great music to enlighten the evening. A duet from “A Star is Born” Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper drew a standing ovation from almost everyone. Rudolph, Amy Poehler, and Tina Fey introduced the telecast. It was followed by an opening performance of “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.”

The Duration

Last year, the Oscars ratings were at an all-time low. ABC decided seemingly found a solution to the problem by cutting the duration of Oscars 2019 to just three hours. Weird, but true!
