Top 5 Highlights from the BAFTA 2019 Ceremony
It was a huge night of surprises at the British Academy Film Awards
BAFTA 2019 was a grand affair, and a lot happened on this starry night. Though celebs like Bradley Cooper and Lily Collins talked about the weather, a lot of other interesting things also happened. Here’s what worth knowing about the major event.
1. Joanna Lumley’s Efforts Didn’t Impress Much
Though the English actress tried to crack jokes, her jokes seemed to be lacking conviction, and it felt that her heart wasn’t in it. It gave a fair idea of how hostless Oscars will feel this year.
2. The Big Wins Were Good Enough
The Favourite netted seven wins including Best British Film, Costume, Make-Up, Screenplay, and production awards. The Best Actress award went to Olivia Colman while Rachel Weisz was crowned Best Supporting Actress. Roma won four BAFTAS.
3. Rami Malek Got the Best Actor Award
The Best Actor award was awarded to Rami Malek during BAFTA 2019 for portraying Freddie Mercury which probably raised his hopes of an Oscars. Malek’s key competitors are stars like Bradley Cooper, Viggo Mortensen, and Christian Bale. Mahershala Ali won best supporting actor and gave a short but heart touching speech.
4. Richard E. Grant Won Million Hearts
Richard E. Grant added a lot of positivity and shine to the memorable evening by repeatedly standing up to appreciate wins of other people. He also shared videos of himself in which he can be seen dancing in a hotel corridor while abiding by his daughter’s instructions.
5. Veganism Ruled
People’s obsession with veganism probably helped 73 Cows film to win in the short film category. In the film, Jay and Katja Wilde start growing vegan crops to avoid sending cattle to slaughter and send their 73 cows to an animal shelter.
A few worthy disappointments that must be shared are the lack of an award for Richard E. Grant and Vice getting only an editing award despite being nominated in different categories.
Though the evening was as memorable as Grammys 2019, the list of winners wasn’t what most fans expected. You can have a look at the complete list of winners of BAFTA 2019 right here.
