Many movie buffs probably still like to read the list of Golden Globe winners while waiting for the Oscar nominations to be announced. If you are one of them, then your wait has ended. The Academy Award nominations were announced recently, and most of the limelight was on Black Panther as it created history.

Yes, the movie that received a lot of appreciation and earned a hefty profit made the remarkable feat of receiving seven Oscar nominations. One of the most prestigious nominations it has is the Best Picture, and it’s a matter of pride for all the superhero movie lovers because Black Panther is the first Marvel offering that’s nominated. Surprisingly, it is also the first superhero movie to achieve this feat.

Though most comic book films do well at the box office (look at the anticipation building for Spider-man: Far from Home for instance), such kind of movies don’t leave a mark at the Academy Awards. If they do get a nomination, it is usually for technical achievements that barely get noticed.

Some of the reasons why Black Panther got the nomination are a deeply human story, strong performances by stars like Chadwick Boseman, Letitia Wright, Michael B. Jordan, and smart social commentary. For the superhero movies lovers, it is more than a movie, it became something like a movement, especially when the “Wakanda forever!” rallying cry became popular all over the globe.

This is not the first-time black Panther has made history. It also made history by being nominated as Best Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes. Unfortunately, it lost the award to Bohemian Rhapsody. Now, at the Oscars, it is up against not only Bohemian Rhapsody, but BlacKkKlans-man, The Favourite, A Star is Born, Roma, Green Book, and Vice as well.

The other nominations of Black Panther are Best Original Song, Best Original Score, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Sound Editing.

Another Marvel creation, Avengers: Infinity War has been nominated for Best Visual Effects.

The Oscars are scheduled for February 24, 2019, and we all must wait for that memorable day to see how many awards Black Panther actually ends up winning.
