A Battery That Last a Million Kilometres? Tesla Can Make It Happen!

Electric motors consume electricity like anything which makes things tough for a rechargeable battery. The power cells commonly available in electric vehicles such as Tesla cars have a lifespan of anywhere between 480,000 km to 800,000 km. New Research says that the battery life of the electric vehicles like those produced by Tesla can be doubled, which means that the batteries might outlast the cars too!

According to a paper that was published in The Journal of the Electrochemical Society some time back, battery researchers from Halifax, Nova Scotia’s Dalhousie University have described a new lithium-ion battery which might power an electric vehicle for over 1.6 million kilometres which comes to more than 4,000 charging cycles while it loses only 10 percent of its charging capacity as well as the vehicle range as it nears the end of its total lifespan. If this invention is real, it will be a boon for vehicles that remain on the clock constantly like shuttle, taxis, or delivery trucks!

If you think someone has outsmarted Elon Musk at last and Tesla has lagged in upgrading the battery while it focused on offering vehicles with Plaid Mode or worked towards providing Netflix and YouTube to the car owners then you are wrong. Musk and Tesla have once again proved they are the best as the Dalhousie team has been researching on improving lithium-ion batteries exclusively for Tesla. The team unveiled that it came up with a million km battery by optimizing all key ingredients like artificial graphite and then the focus was on improving the nanostructure of lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide with an aim to create a crystal structure that won’t crack easily and lower the performance.

Tesla doesn’t believe in giving away its secrets so easily, and that’s the case this time too. Just a few days after this research was published, Tesla was awarded a patent for a new electric vehicle battery that has exact chemical makeup as the ones detailed by the battery researchers in the paper.

The details of when the battery will be produced by Tesla are sketchy yet, but once again, Musk has proved that he is the smartest of the lot and plans to remain that way in the years to come. Also, Tesla has once again raised the bar high when it comes to creating powerful vehicles with powerful batteries. Won’t you agree?
